Postcode and distance data sources

How MoveRadius turns postcodes into coordinates and measures distance, and where the underlying open data comes from.

Verify at the source

All distances on MoveRadius are straight-line ('as the crow flies'). Real walking and driving routes are longer — use a maps service for actual journeys.

How distance is calculated

We convert a postcode to latitude and longitude with postcodes.io, then measure the great-circle (straight-line) distance between two points using the Haversine formula. This is the same method many admissions authorities use, but each authority sets its own approach — some measure a walking route instead. See our guide to how school distance is measured for detail.
